A five-minute breathing practice for autumn evenings
In Kamakura, October is the month the light changes. The sun drops behind the hills a little earlier each day, the sea turns from blue to pewter, and by six o’clock the streets near the salon are already in shadow. Many guests tell us they notice it in themselves too: the days feel shorter, but somehow just as full.
Autumn is a good season to practise ending the day on purpose, rather than letting it fade out in front of a screen. One of the simplest ways we know is a short breathing practice — the same four-count rhythm you may have seen the light follow on our homepage. It takes five minutes, needs no equipment, and you can do it at a kitchen table.
Why a fixed count helps
When we are busy, breathing tends to become quick and shallow without our noticing. Counting gives the mind one small, neutral thing to hold on to. You are not trying to breathe better — only to breathe on purpose for a few minutes.
We use an even count of four in and four out because it is easy to remember and comfortable for most people. If four feels long, use three. If it feels short, try five. The number matters far less than keeping it steady.
The practice
Find a moment after dinner, or just before you start getting ready for bed. Turn off the main light if you can and leave a single lamp on.
- Sit comfortably. A chair is fine. Rest both feet on the floor and let your hands lie in your lap.
- Let your eyes soften. Close them, or rest your gaze on a point on the floor a little in front of you.
- Breathe in through your nose for a count of four. Not a big gulp of air — just a little slower and fuller than usual.
- Breathe out for a count of four. Through the nose or a slightly open mouth, whichever feels easier.
- Repeat for about five minutes. That is roughly thirty-five breaths. You do not need to count them; a gentle timer works well.
If your mind wanders — and it will — simply notice where it went and return to the next count of one. Wandering is not a mistake. Coming back is the practice.
Making it a small ritual
The practice becomes easier when it is attached to something you already do. A few ideas from guests:
- Make a cup of caffeine-free tea first, and begin while it cools.
- Light a candle at the start and blow it out at the end.
- Do it by a window and watch the last of the evening light.
- Keep a notebook nearby and write a single line afterwards — one thing from the day you would like to keep.
None of these are required. The point is to give your evening a clear edge: the day before, and the evening after.
If it feels uncomfortable
Breathing exercises are meant to feel easy. If counting makes you feel tense or light-headed, stop, return to your natural breath, and try again another day with a shorter count. There is no prize for pushing through.
This is a relaxation practice, not a treatment. If you have a respiratory condition, are pregnant, or have any concerns about your health, please check with your doctor before starting a new breathing routine.
Bringing it into a session
Every session at HAKU ends with a few minutes of this same breath before you sit up. Some guests like to practise it at home in the weeks between visits, so that the rhythm already feels familiar when they lie down. If you would like us to walk you through it in person, just mention it during your tea at the start of your session — we are happy to spend a few extra minutes on it.
As the nights grow longer, we hope this gives you somewhere quiet to land at the end of each day. Five minutes, four counts, one lamp. That is enough.
Light moves at its own pace. So can you.
